IPL 2021: MI vs SRH Review: Boult, Chahar help MI defend 150 against SRH

Mumbai Indians won their second successive match as they beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 13 runs in the IPL 2021 league match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match went down to the wire, with momentum shifting either way during the entire match. But, in the end, it was the execution of good bowling skills by Mumbai Indians which helped them prevail.

Winning the toss Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma elected to bat first. Sharma and Quinton de Kock started with a controlled opening stand. Their stand of 55 was broken when Rohit got out for 32 off 25 balls off the bowling of Vijay Shankar. The medium pace bowler of Hyderabad picked up another wicket during the innings, finishing with a spell of 2 for 19.

Mujeeb ur Rahman who came into the side for this game bowled well and picked up two wickets. De Kock made 40 while Kieron Pollard played a crucial hand of 35 runs from 22 balls which helped Mumbai finish at 150 for 5 from their 20 overs. Hyderabad started their innings in style with Jonny Bairstow racing along with boundaries.

He made 43 runs off 22 balls. He was well supported by David Warner, who scored 36 runs. It was Warner’s run out which turned the match in Mumbai’s favour. Shankar tried his best with his knock of 28 runs from 25 but Mumbai were too good in the death overs. After being close to 60 runs in the first six overs, Hyderabad lost the match by 13 runs. Trent Boult and Rahul Chahar picked three wickets each for Mumbai.

Turning points:

David Warner’s run out: When Jonny Bairstow got out it seemed like Hyderabad was going to struggle to get the target after getting a fantastic start. Warner was batting well and it gave some hope to the SRH dugout. However, his run out brought Mumbai back in the match. With the pitch slightly tricky, Hyderabad needed an experienced batsman at the crease. Hardik Pandya’s throw was brilliant.

Rahul Chahar’s spell: In the previous match, his four-for helped Mumbai slowly crawl back in the match and eventually win it. Today as well, something same happened with the leg-spinner bringing his side back in the match with his spell of 3 for 19 in four overs. He took the wickets of Virat Singh, Abhishek Sharma and Manish Pandey.

Personal record/achievements:

This was the 6th consecutive loss for SRH at Chepauk.

This is the first time SRH have lost their first three games of an IPL season

Way ahead:

Hyderabad’s next match is against Punjab Kings on April 21 in Chennai. Mumbai will now play against Delhi Capitals on April 20.
