David Willey announces retirement from international cricket after ODI World Cup

David Willey, the pace bowler from England, has decided to officially retire from international cricket after the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. In the midst of the tournament, the 33-year-old cricketer took to his Instagram to break the news to his fans. Willey, who made his debut for the England team in May 2015 against Ireland. Now, he has decided to hang up his boots after the culmination of the marquee event.

Willey has been a standout performer among England’s cricketing ranks in the ongoing event. He bagged five wickets at an impressive average of 27.20. Not only did he excel with the ball, but he also contributed with the bat, amassing 42 runs while batting in the lower order.

Meanwhile, Willey will continue playing franchise cricket across the globe. He is all geared up to represent the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders in the ILT20 in January 2024. Furthermore, there is a possibility that he might secure his spot with the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the upcoming IPL season.

Willey, notably was a key figure in the England squad that finished as runners-up in the 2016 World T20. He contributed with a commendable 3 for 20 in the final match against West Indies. Additionally, he earned a spot in England’s provisional squad for the 2019 World Cup, but found himself disappointingly omitted at the eleventh hour to accommodate the emergence of Jofra Archer.
